Filtering glass straw is an open-source design that provides a simple, inexpensive alternative to current plastic water filters. A pair of collapsing glass tubes envelop a filter cartridge consisting of dried coriander, activated coal powder and dried moringa seed powder. These materials and herbs are known for their purifying properties.
The filter cartridge is held in place by two porous sintered glass discs whose porosity must be carefully balanced to achieve effective filtration. This project was developed for the A / D / O Water Futures Design Challenge to propose a new water filtration solution to increase the accessibility of clean water.
